Ouzoud Falls Visitor Guide — Tips, Costs & Getting There

Your complete guide to visiting Ouzoud Falls, Morocco

Ouzoud Falls is one of North Africa's most spectacular natural sites — 110 metres of cascading water, wild Barbary macaques, olive groves, and cliff-side restaurants. This guide covers everything you need to plan a perfect visit.

Getting there

From Marrakech by organised tour

The easiest and most popular option. Day trips depart daily from Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech. A typical tour includes return transport, a local guide, and around 5 hours at the falls. Cost: 200–350 MAD per person. We recommend booking in advance through GetYourGuide or Viator.

By grand taxi (shared taxi)

The cheapest option. Take a shared grand taxi from Marrakech to Azilal (around 60 MAD, 2 hours), then a second taxi from Azilal to Ouzoud village (around 20 MAD, 45 minutes). Total journey: 3 to 4 hours. Taxis depart when full so allow extra time.

By rental car (self-drive)

The most flexible option. From Marrakech take the N8 highway toward Béni Mellal, then follow signs to Ouzoud. Journey time: approximately 2.5 hours. Free parking is available at the site entrance. A rental car also lets you stop at Bin el Ouidane lake on the way.

From Béni Mellal

If you are coming from Béni Mellal, Ouzoud is only 60 km away — approximately 1 hour by car or grand taxi.

Entrance fees and costs

There is no entrance fee to visit Ouzoud Falls. The site is free and open year-round, every day.

  • Boat ride to the base of the falls: approximately 30 MAD per person — highly recommended
  • Tagine at a riverside restaurant: 60–120 MAD
  • Mint tea: 10–15 MAD
  • Guided canyon hike: 100–200 MAD depending on the guide
  • Parking: Free

Best time to visit

March to May — Best season

The waterfalls are at full power after winter rains. Temperatures are mild (18–25°C), the landscape is lush and green, and the light is perfect for photography. This is the most popular time — arrive early to beat the crowds.

October to November — Great alternative

Fewer tourists, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful golden autumn light. Water flow is still good from autumn rains. One of the best times for photographers.

June to August — Possible but not ideal

Very hot (35°C+), water flow is significantly reduced, and weekends become extremely crowded with day-trippers from Marrakech. If visiting in summer, arrive before 8am.

December to February — Off season

Cold but dramatic. The falls are powerful, mist fills the canyon, and you will often have the site almost to yourself. Bring warm layers.

How long to spend at Ouzoud

Most visitors spend between 5 and 7 hours at the falls. A typical day looks like this:

  • Morning: Arrive early, walk down to the viewpoints, take the boat ride under the main falls
  • Midday: Lunch at one of the cliff-side restaurants with a view of the falls
  • Afternoon: Hike the canyon trail, spot Barbary macaques in the olive trees, explore the upper viewpoint
  • Evening: Stay overnight to catch sunset and sunrise — completely different without the crowds

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes — the path down to the falls is steep and can be slippery from mist
  • A light waterproof jacket — the mist from the falls soaks everything near the base
  • Cash — most restaurants, boat operators, and local guides do not accept cards
  • Sunscreen and a hat — there is little shade on the upper viewing areas
  • A refillable water bottle — stay hydrated especially in summer
  • A camera or fully charged phone — you will want to take many photos

Insider tips

  • Arrive before 9am to experience the falls before the day-trip coaches arrive from Marrakech
  • The upper viewpoint at the top of the falls gives the best panoramic photos — most day-trippers never find it
  • Do not feed the Barbary macaques — they are wild animals and will bite
  • The boat ride under the main falls is the highlight of any visit — book it with the local operators at the bottom of the path
  • Stay overnight in one of the guesthouses in Ouzoud village — sunrise at the falls with no crowds is unforgettable
  • The rainbow appears at the base of the falls in the morning when the sun hits the mist — best between 9am and 11am
  • Weekends from June to August are the most crowded — visit on a weekday if possible

Where to stay near Ouzoud Falls

Several guesthouses and riads are located right in Ouzoud village, steps from the falls. Staying overnight is one of the best decisions you can make — it gives you access at sunrise and sunset when the site is at its most magical.
